We have all heard of those families who have had a long line of generational success. We envy them, their charisma and intelligence. It makes us feel as if they have been born with all the right skills and resources that we don’t inherently have. We may feel that we are destined to be unsuccessful in realising our dreams.
But, why?
Looking at your family, you may notice some patterns. Their pessimistic approach to taking risks and labelling it as being ‘realistic’, or condemning ambitious dreams that aren’t considered ‘sensible’. We become afraid to dream, afraid to act, simply because it has been ingrained into us from a young age to be reasonable.
The truth is you possess the ability to develop all the same skills and talents as those who have found success. The only thing you lack is the mindset.
Being surrounded by people who were too afraid to try, who diminished their own capabilities, whose mothers and fathers always told them not to waste their time, warps your mindset. Imagine if you were surrounded by people who had big dreams and limitless courage.
Now imagine becoming that person.
Whilst some genetic traits may influence success, they are not the determining factor. Although, we should not disregard our natural talents and abilities. Everyone has their inherent likes, advantages and skills, and these can be used to shape our success. Perhaps you are good with numbers, or clever with words, or deft with a paintbrush. Whatever your strength is, it can be used to hone transferable skills into your passion.
There are endless free courses out there that can give you insight into different fields and allow you to build various skills, and also infinite articles, books and videos. The information is out there, you just have to find it, commit to it, and get started.
The next time you get discouraged by somebody else’s success, and you think you could never accomplish what they have, genuinely ask yourself: ‘Well, why not me?’
